PREPARING FOR YOUR BIG MOVE

READY, SET, GO!
Moving can be a time consuming and difficult project to prepare for. After you have chosen PURNELL MOVING & HAULING to assist you with your next move, come back to this page to review these suggestions on how to be ready to go when they arrive at your door:

  • Try to avoid setting the move date near the beginning or end of the month. Movers are busiest at these times. If possible, try to avoid moving near the end of summer in order to avoid the rush of folks trying to move right before school opens.  After you set a delivery date – try to stick to it! Storing your belongs for any length of time could add unnecessary costs to your move.
  • Boxes of equal sizes are easiest to stack at home and secure on the moving van. Start cleaning out your home or office of stuff you no longer need. Be brutal. If you have boxes that haven't been unpacked since your last move, maybe it's time to think about getting rid of them.
  • If you are also moving a lawn mower or any other gas powered equipment, be sure to drain all gas and oil from it. No flammable liquids can be transported on public carriers. The same goes with hazardous materials. This includes many common household cleaning products. Use them up before your move or give them to a neighbor.
  • You should handle your valuables such as jewelry, currency, legal documents and other important papers personally. Always try to keep them in your immediate possession.
  • Be sure to backup your computer files before your system is moved.
Arrange for your accounts and contents of any safety deposit boxes to be transferred to a bank in your new neighborhood.
  • Contact your Doctor, Dentist and Pharmacist to have your records sent to a new provider. They may also be able to help you choose medical professionals in your new neighborhood.
  • Turn in a Change of Address Form to have your mail forwarded. Be sure to contact everyone who regularly sends you mail to notify them of your new address before your forwarding order expires.

Be sure to let everyone know you're moving. Businesses to contact often include your:

  • Bank
  • Newspaper Carrier
  • Trash Collector
  • Pest Control Company
  • Lawn Service Company
  • Post Office
  • Utility Companies
  • Local Internet Service Provider

Make up a separate box of things you'll need right away at your new home, such as:

  • Toiletries
  • Sheets & Pillowcases
  • Towels
  • Tissues
  • Baby Articles
  • Light Bulbs
  • Hand Tools
  • Hammer
  • Pliers
  • Screwdrivers
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Assortment of nails, screws, etc.
  • Medicines / First-Aid Kit
  • Personal address book with important phone numbers

If you have children, try to keep them well informed about your plans.
Moving is a traumatic experience for many young people. Leaving their friends behind can be difficult. You might try to help them collect their friend’s home and/or e-mail addresses so they have a way to stay in touch. Let them help you make some of the decisions about what to take and what to leave behind so that they feel they are a part of the planning process.

Remember that you are all in this together. Good planning, cooperation and communication can go a long way towards making your next move a pleasant and enjoyable experience for the entire family.

Good Luck and thank you for using PURNELL MOVING & HAULING!
